Yet, we realize that our customers need more. Since the useful lifetime of an industrial machine can extend from years to decades, customers need to be confident that their major automation suppliers are dedicated to long term support for their products. Delta’s policy is to avoid obsoleting products as long as there is demand for them.

Also, the combination of products that use PLC-like programming instead of more customized programming methods and extensive training classes makes it possible for OEMs to take greater product ownership, greatly reducing long term costs. And for OEMs that do not have an engineering staff, a large number of systems integrators are trained on Delta’s controllers for more support when needed.

A Brief History of Delta

Systems Experience

In 1982, Delta Computer Systems, Inc was incorporated to provide high-performance electronics controls for industrial applications.

Knowing that industrial customers need stable suppliers for critical technology purchases, Delta’s key goals included serving diversified markets, being fiscally conservative, and providing rewarding job opportunities. (Delta’s continued growth and low employee turnover are results of this focus).

In the early years, Delta successfully completed a variety of projects including electron beam guidance systems for melting titanium and controls for machines that detect and remove defects from French fries. (Delta engineers gained first-hand experience with control systems integration challenges—leading to comprehensive setup and diagnostic tools for Delta’s products and a dedication to responsive support).

The First Delta Motion Controllers

Recognizing an opportunity to simplify control systems by integrating motion control and PLCs, Delta developed its first product, the MC186/40. (It is still available—showing Delta’s commitment to legacy products: do not obsolete as long as demand exists).

Motion product sales grew rapidly in the early 80’s as Delta introduced additional products and expanded into many applications. (Delta doesn’t integrate its own products (to avoid competing with customers), and concentrates on selling through distribution and integrating via OEM’s and control systems integrators).

Delta’s engineers cleverly designed the bus-based motion controllers to plug directly into PLCs and to talk directly to PLC registers, greatly simplifying the integration of these products. In addition, these “Delta cards” connected directly to most industrial transducers, including specialized transducers for fluid power applications.

Delta soon developed a reputation as experts in industrial motion control, with extensive knowledge in specialized areas such as fluid power and pressure control and technical support people that truly care. (Unlike many companies, where tech support is an entry-level function, Delta’s has experienced people available 24/7, backed up with the very engineers that designed the products. This ensures responsiveness and Delta’s products benefit when the designers see them in real applications).

The RMC Families

In response to increasing requests for connectivity to additional PLCs, Delta took advantage of the emerging fieldbus technology and developed a motion controller specifically designed to talk to any PLC or host system, the RMC100. Delta’s engineers designed the RMC to “look” like a PLC over the bus, and provided a unique Step Table whereby time-critical sequences could be offloaded into the RMC. It soon became common to hear customers boast that, with the RMC, they were able to complete projects in days that would have taken weeks with other motion controllers.

Color Sensors

Delta also developed a series of color sensors aimed at challenging applications in color recognition, especially on textured materials.
